A bit of historyThe island "Mauritius" was named after Prince Maurice of Nassau by the Dutch in 1598. The French renamed the island, Isle de France when they took control of Mauritius in 1715. The British administrated the Island after the Battle of Grand Port in 1810. Mauritius proclaimed its independence on 12 March 1968 and adopted a new constitution. The same year, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam became the first Prime Minister of an independent Mauritius with Queen Elizabeth II remaining head of state as Queen of Mauritius. In 1992, Mauritius was proclaimed a Republic within the Commonwealth of Nations. our added value
